Worplesdon Golf Club

Worplesdon Golf Club

Overview

Worplesdon is one of the classic Surrey heathland courses, and the highest ranked of the '3 W's'. It was laid out in 1908 by J F Abercromby, with Willie Park Jr constructing greens and bunkers. Abercromby was one of the most celebrated golf architects of his time, while Park was a prolific course designer and constructor, who created the Old Course at Sunningdale. The course remains pretty much as it was set out over a century ago, and provides a fine test for the club golfer in stunningly beautiful surroundings. The clubhouse exudes its distinguished history as soon as you walk through the door and see the wooden beamed hallway. The dining room as you might expect is classical in nature and geared towards a camaraderie between members with its long tables all surrounded by illustrious names on the honours boards. Enjoying a day at Worplesdon is like taking a step back through time, you can even smell it in the air. It's a wonderful experience, and a fabulous golf course. Like many of its neighbours, the 6500 yards is perhaps a little misleading. Worplesdon plays every inch of that, and taxes the mind much more than the muscle. It's a triumph, and should be included on every itinerary taken in the south of England.
