Autumn Invitational Round 4
The New Course in St Andrews played host to the final round of the 17th Connoisseur Golf Autumn Invitational. Three past champions were in the field, but none had done enough to enter the mix come Thursday. Teeing off, Utah's Ryan Halliday held a three shot lead and didn't show any signs of nerves over the opening holes. Pars at 1 and 2 were followed by a birdie on the par five 3rd. Conditions were conducive to good scoring, so Halliday couldn't sit back and let the field come to him, he had to keep the foot down. An eagle on the par five 8th gave him a bit of breathing space going into the back nine.
Elsewhere, the main charge was being made by Taylor Reynolds. After winning Wednesday's round on the Old Course, he continued his hot streak by carding three birdies in his first four holes. Hiren Desai was also making progress, off-setting a double on the tricky 5th with five early birdies. New Jersey Golfer Tom Holt was in contention with a stellar front nine of 22 points, but will go on to rue a couple of big numbers on 10 and 13 which ultimately put paid to his chances.
Further down the leaderboard, Carolinas Golfer Jason Schmucker was playing like a man possessed. When you hold a 19.2 index, it's imperative to take the rough with the smooth. Schmucker was doing just that, throwing in birdies, eagles, doubles and even a treble. They say scorecards paint no pictures, but if they did, we'd be looking at a Jackson Pollock. All told, it equated to 41 points, winning the daily prize and capping off a wonderful week with some silverware.
In the scratch tournament, Mississaugua's Conrad Hansuld prevailed as our 2025 champion. His father Randy (also in the field) is a distinguished Canadian curler, and perhaps some of those tactics and patience wore off, as Hansuld Jr played beautifully throughout the week. The shots required at The Home of Golf were a lot different to what he was used to, but he embraced the challenge like a true scratch golfer and came out the other side with a few new strings to his bow.
Halliday and Desai both stumbled over the closing stretch, but the former's lead was substantial enough to allow for a five shot margin of victory. Halliday is a deserving winner of Connoisseur's Claret Jug. He's a deep-thinker of the game, and really appreciates golf in it's purest form. His form travels well, being a member at Glenwild, Tree Farm and also at Marcella Club where Tiger is currently building an 8000-yard behemoth.
Sky Sports Broadcaster Iona Stephen was in convivial form at the prize-giving dinner. Her knowledge of the game, her love of St Andrews, and ability to enthral an audience all shone through in a captivating performance with the mic.
